DON'T LET'S GO TO THE DOGS TONIGHT: An African Childhood.

Some brief overview of book

On one level, this is a recollection of a white girl growing up in Africa, the daughter of British farmers. At another level, it is the political turmoil of the violent transition from white to black rule in those countries in southern Africa. But it is also a love letter to Africa, in all its exoticism, contradictions, beauty and pain.

Fuller does not sugar coat. She matter of factly describes the endemic racism of the white settlers and her mother's descent into deep depression and alcoholism after the loss of a child. Dangerous and traumatic events are presented as daily realities without embroidery or self pity.

But there is a liveliness of spirit and love of life that infects the prose at every moment. This is an charming tale with sharp edges. A little classic.
