Some brief overview of book
A colorful but rather simplistic presentation of the country's history since the British founding. The author has a good collection of postcards and old photographs of historic scenes and puts them to good use. The book is roughly split between describing the physical history in the form of various important buildings and their architectural background, and the history of the major ethnic groups, highlighting main festivals and practices.
Lastly there is a short chapter on natural heritage in terms of significant flora and fauna, though there are some factual errors that would be glaring to the keen naturalist, such as rhinoceros hornbills having made a come back (it is instead the oriental pied hornbill). No attempt is made at any critical analysis of the legacy of colonial rule and nothing mentioned of the Japanese invasion and occupation, thus coming across as an overly cheerful depiction of Singapore history. This book would probably make the list of reading material for primary schools I reckon.
